Separation and transformation of three UK airports

Background

The running of an airport is a serious business.

From an operational perspective, there are so many moving parts, disciplines, and teams – all working together to get travellers from A to B safely. And so it’s no surprise that, in the name of safety, all airside incidents must be recorded. They are then often reported to a number of different professional bodies, airlines, and third parties who work to continually improve air travel.

This whole process is known as Airside Incident Management.

The Problem

The term ‘airside’ means the parts of the airport that are largely out of bounds to travellers – in essence, the tarmac and runways. An ‘incident’ might be something as minor as lost luggage, an airport vehicle parked in the wrong place, or an object that’s tumbled out onto the tarmac. It could also be something more serious like a fault, or injury. With the more minor incidents happening all the time, you can imagine the administrative burden required to acquire all the information in relation to
each and keep these records up to date and accurate.

Airside Incident Management requires a sizeable resource and that’s exactly what Heathrow Airport felt when they appointed Lion & Gazelle to assess and streamline the process.

Our Solution

We were able to create and build a PowerApp for Heathrow that automated much of its Airside Incident Management operation. We ensured the app is mobile-enabled, meaning pictures and details can be gathered at the site of the incident. Once the information is to hand, the app automatically notifies the appropriate third parties, cutting the time and money required to maintain this vital process. It also stores all input information safely and generates reports which are just as essential to the ongoing development of airside operations.

PowerApps is a tool that allows you to build automations for day-to-day processes, in many cases harnessing the power of AI and digital to remove manual tasks from team members. This was the case for Heathrow, who, upon completion of their PowerApp instantly unlocked efficiencies, freeing up time and budget that can now be deployed elsewhere in this incredibly busy airport.
